Nodes

A Node is an important organizational element within CygNet Measurement, that facilitates meaningful and efficient viewing, sorting, and editing of data. A Node in the system can represent a device or a group, of various configurations.

A Session Node is a special designation of a selected Node, that can be used to further navigate through large quantities of data in FMS Explorer. See Session Node for more information.

In FMS Explorer, Nodes are configured and managed through the Nodes menu. See Using the Nodes Menu for more information.

You must have proper security authorization to create and manage Nodes. See FMS Security (and NODE security event) for more information about configuring security access to Node management.

Node Categories

Measurement data is managed on both device and station levels. To facilitate data handling, Nodes can be configured in a variety of ways to support data requirements specific to your enterprise needs.

Possible Node categories include the following.

Note: Once a Node is created, it cannot be converted to another Node type.

Device Nodes

A device Node, such as a gas meter, chromatograph, or liquid device, corresponds to a point at which data is collected. Data for device Nodes can be collected via the CygNet polling engine or through file imports.

Note: A Gas Meter Node can optionally be configured to also act as a station (to both measure and report data), in which case it is a Station Meter Node.

Device Node types include the following.

Gas Meter Device Node

Gas Meter Device Node

Station Meter Node Station Meter Node (a Gas Meter Node optionally configured to also function as a station)

Chromatograph Device Node

Liquid Device Node

Group Nodes

A group Node, which is itself a Node type, contains one or more other Nodes, grouped according to type or category.

Group Node types include the following.

  General Group Note

General Group Node

  Station Group Node

Station Group Node

Note: This organization and hierarchy of group Nodes is specific within CygNet Measurement (FMS), and has no connection with the CygNet Group Service (GRP).

Group Nodes allow for the aggregation of multiple Nodes for a variety of data end-use purposes including balancing, station rollups, reporting, user jurisdiction or workflow, etc. The group Node properties, including a list of the member Nodes assigned to the group Node, can be viewed through the group Node Properties dialog box.

The following generally describes group Node types in CygNet Measurement.

See Group Node Membership Requirements for more specific information.

Group Node Type Description Eligible Group Members Unique Entries

General Group

A group defining a list of devices for many different purposes including poll groups, analyst responsibility, rollups, etc.

Any device Node, Station Group Node, and/or General Group Node

No*

*Can optionally enforce uniqueness

If used, uniqueness type options are as follows.

  • Validation Engine
  • Estimation Engine
  • Station Balance
  • Composition Split

Station Group

Physical station group -

contains gas meter device(s).

Virtual station group -

contains other stations or liquid device Nodes, therefore does not have time settings (data is rolled up using the time format specified in the associated normalization view).

Physical -

gas meter device Nodes only (cannot contain Chromatograph Nodes, Station Meter Nodes, or other Station Group Nodes)

Virtual -

other stations (Station Group Nodes or Station Meter Nodes) or liquid device Nodes

Yes

See the following topics for more information about creating, viewing, and editing group Nodes.
